THE RUNNING IN REVIEW. TRACK IN PERFECT ORDER. GAMBLE WINS EASILY. FINE EFFORT BY WORTHY LIGHT. ' HAROLD LOGAN WINS EASILY. (Notes by The Rook.) Christchurch, November 8. The second day of the Metropolitan Trotting Club meeting had the best weather of the week. The track was in perfect order and the almost total absence of wind made for fast times. Tlie machine had no sooner opened for the Whiteleigh Handicap than Teviot Downs was made an odds-on favourite. Evidently the public had discovered that his reins having parted was the cause of his galloping on Tuesday. The favourite began smartly and at the end of a quarter was heading a procession, Cannonball, King’s Voyage, Don Chenault, Sea Gift being the order, the last named having lost her place owing to a break. Nell Volo who was kept half turned round, was pulled straight just as the tapes were released and being on the move went away properly. Sea Gift gradually improved her position and passing her opponents steadly was up to challenge Teviot Downs entering the straight. She ran on to beat Teviot Downs comfortably by a length with New Metford three lengths further back. Nell Volo was a fair fourth. Nell Volo has undoubted speed. Her times for her last mile were: Half 1 min 3 l-ssec and mile in 2min Bsec. She broke in her last half mile when running sixth with five furlongs to go, nicely placed on the rails. Fifa ran up on the outer and shut her in. Had this not happened she might have' won, but she would have had to step, for the winner did the work properly. The Derby. The bracket Gamble and Boltaire was backed down to almost even money in the New Zealand Derby Stakes. Subsidy and Gamble from No. 1 and 2, were the first to begin with Red Ranger from No. 6 with them. All went away, one of them slowly. Graham Direct and Ironside and Drag Harlan were soon well back while Floodlight lost all chance by breaking after going 100 yards. At the end of a quarter Gamble, from third place, rushed past Subsidy and Red Ranger. He soon had a good lead and at the end of the first lap Donalda and Lord Axworthy rushed up. The order was Gamble, Donalda, Lord Axworthy, Subsidy, Red Ranger. Once into the back stretch Gamble cleared out. Donalda and Lord Axworthy cried enough, but Subsidy, a solid customer, struck to his task. Beaten by Gamble a good seven lengths, Subsidy beat Drag Harlan, who finished very fast, by four lengths. Ironsides was next, followed at intervals—rather big ones—by Lord Axworthy, Graham Direct, Moana Tama, Grace McElwyn. There is no doubt to-day that Gamble was easily the best in the Derby field. Some of his opponents, however, will see better days, for they were very green.

Glenrossie failed to go away properly in the Courtenay Handicap. The rest began smartly. Wrecker led from Sunny Morn, Gold Tinge and Silver De Oro, the rest of the field being bunched behind. Gold Tinge took the lead at the end of a lap from Silver De Oro, wrecker and Sunny Mom with Worthy Light, who had not begun, well and Sir Guy, closing up. With three furlongs to go Gold Tinge let Silver De Oro through on the fence and she led into the straight from Sunny Morn and Harvest Child, with Sir Guy and Worthy Light coming fast. Silver De Oro came on looking a winner, but a hundred yards from the post McKendry had to ask her to go on because Worthy Light and Sir Guy were being too attentive. She left her feet under pressure and Worthy Light beat Sir Guy a length, with Silver De Oro a length further back. Sunny Mom

was a neek away, just beating Harvest Child and Glenrossie. Wrackler finished a bad eighth. He appears to be a spent light. Roddy was left at the post in the Ellesmere Handicap. Nelson De Oro led from Colonial Boy, Linella, Sure, War Paint, Prairie King, Muriel De Oro and Tempest, the lot being packed closely. The order was the same running up the back, with Muriel De Oro followed by Tempest, closing up. Purser and Colonial Boy were first into the straight, but at once Tempest shot past them and ran home a very easy winner four lengths ahead of Muriel De Oro, who beat Morning Sun a neck.

Taxpayer was a neck away, just beating Master Roy, who got a bad passage and might win a race before the meeting closes. Hot Favourite Scores. Encounter was backed down to almost even money in the November Handicap. Manoeuvre, Queen Author, Arabond and Probationer lost a lot of ground at the start. It was a falsely nm race. Major Lind led at little better than half-pace from Encounter, Mountain Ore, Wild Guy and Cloudy Range, all in single file. The first mile was run in 2min 19 3-ssec. At the end of a mile the pace brightened up. Encounter took charge, with Mount, in Ore and Cloudy Range almost level, Wild Guy and Gay Gordon and Avemus behind them. The order was the same to the straight, where Gay Gordon pulled out and challenged the leaders. A good race home saw Encounter beat Wild Guy a head, with Gay Gordon half a length away, with Mountain Ore almost three lengths away. Avemus was fifth and Queen Author sixth. It was a badly run race. The first mile was awful, then Encounter hit the pace up and ran the last mile in 2min 9sec, the last half in Imin 2 3-ssec. He won easily. Fembrook Lass, favourite for the Metropolitan Handicap, was slow to get away. Real Burton led and, with Holly Bank and Prince Author, set a merry pace, well clear of Elvo, the four being well clear of the rest. Prince Author took the lead passing the stand, with Real Burton and Holly Bank handy. The order was the same until half a mile from home, where Elvo moved up and took third place. The order was the same with a round to go, where Elvo challenged for the lead. At this stage there were loud yells to some driver to pull out and Real Burton broke. Elvo led along the back from Prince Author, William Tell next, followed by Real Burton. At the winning post Elvo won by three lengths from Prince Author, who was a length in front of Real Burton. The next to finish were William Tell, Jolly Wave, Fembrook Lass and Rey Jpec. The last mile was run in 2min 11 4-5. Garner broke at the start for the Sockbum Handicap. Great Way was first to show from Louis Bingen and Nell Volo. At the end of a quarter Nell Volo ran to the front and was never troubled afterwards. She has only to begin properly to-morrow and she will win again. To-day she was never at top. Great Way was always second. At the finish First Wrack was a length behind Great Way, two lengths clear of the easing up Mountain Mist, with whom Gamer was almost level. Had Garner not lost three seconds at the start, she would certainly have been second. At one stage Nicoya looked likely to get a place, but tired. Olive Nelson and Trampfast were never dangerous. Free-for-Alt Great interest was centred in the Free-for-All over two miles. Harold Logan was first to show out from Impromptu and Roi I’Or, while Blue Mountain stopped on the mark. Impromptu headed Harold Logan in the straight and was first past the winning post and so earned the £5O for the horse to be in front at the end of half a mile. The order at the back was Impromptu, Harold Logan, Roi L’Or, the three being fairly well out from the rest. Before reaching the mile post Impromptu went to a tangle and Harold Logan, pursued by Roi L’Or, went past him. At the end of one mile and a-quarter Harold Logan beat Roi L’Or by a head for the £5O prize. The old gentleman evidently thought the race was finished, for he eased up and Roi L’Or shot past to lead up the back by several lengths. Roi L’Or was first into the straight in the run home, but as soon as M. Holmes shook the whip at Harold Logan, he shot to the front and won., pulling., up by four lengths from Roi L’Or. Red Shadow was four lengths further back, six lengths ahead of Impromptu. Then easing up came Rollo, Lindbergh and Pegaway. Needless to say Harold Logan received an ovation when he paddled back to the scales. The times for the various distances were: One mile, 2min 9sec; twelve furlongs, 3min 12 2-ssec; and full journey, 4min 17 2-ssec. As a matter of fact the race was run at almost an even pace from start to finish. Harold Logan outclassed the opposition. ACCEPTANCES FOR TO-DAY. (Per United Press Association.)
