TRACK IN SPLENDID ORDER. VARIANT SCORES EASILY. NOTES BY THE ROOK. (Special to Times.) Christchurch, November 7. It was fine for the third day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Carnival meeting. The attendance was again good and the tracks in splendid order. A strong nor-easter made the run up the straight hard on the horses. The Port Cooper Hurdles was a nice race to watch. Racing past the stand Hounslow, Red Sun and Monastic were leading from a bunched field, Free Air and Revision being in behind the three ~ leaders. Past Cutts’ Red Sun led Mon-

astic, Revision and Hounslow with the rest close up. Monastic took the lead running along the back with Hounslow. Red Sun, Lycidas and Revision at his heels, in fact the whole field was bunched. With five furlongs to go Monastic led Red Sun, Lycidas and Revision. All were being ridden after entering the straight. Red Sun. hit the second last fence hard and dropped out. Monastic and Lycidas rose at the last fence a shade in front of Revision, but after a desperate finish between the three, Revision squeezed up on the fence to beat Monastic by a good half length. Lycidas was a neck away third. Vitaphone was six lengths back, followed by Hounslow and Coll. Free Air found her weight too much. Silver Sail kept up her record for drawing an outside position by getting No. 7 berth in the Spring Nursery Handicap. She missed the jump and Bun Fight and Kinnoull with Penelope led her on to the course proper, Rompalong and Secure bringing up the rear. Penelope and Bun Fight stopped a little over the last furlong and Kinnoull, staying on, beat Penelope a length with Bun Fight half a length further back. Rompalong, hard ridden all up the straight, beat Silver Sail a neck with Secure next and Hine Ra a rather bad last. Rompalong’s running suggested his being very useful when he races over a longer journey. Canterbury Cup. The five acceptors went to the post for the Canterbury Cup. They stripped well. Polydora in particular was not as excited as she was when paraded earlier in the meeting. There was no delay at the barrier, the five getting away in line. Sporting Blood, Hazoor and Aesculus was the order for the first half mile, rim in 55sec, then Hazoor went up and insisted on the pace being more solid. The six furlongs was left behind in Imin. 20 2-ssec. Over the last half-mile Sporting Blood and Hazoor were all out, with Polydora coming from the rear. Sporting Blood reached the winning post just over a length in front of Hazoor with Polydora a neck away, three lengths ahead of Red Manfred. The nine runners in the Jockey Club Handicap got away in line. Before going a chain The Smuggler got chopped back last and Cricket Bat did not fare much better. Tizzy was the first leader, but Pin Money rushed past and set a cracking pace from Tizzy and Sweet Agnes with Princess Doreen next. There was a mix-up after going a furlong and a-half. Manetho came down and Passion Fruit lost a lot of ground. The first half-mile was run in 48 4-ssec. Turning for home Sweet Agnes joined Pin Money in the lead and Cricket Bat came up on the outer. Sweet Agnes had headed off Pin Money at the false rail and he dropped rapidly to the rear. Sweet Agnes ran home with her ears pricked over a length in front of Passion Fruit who was unlucky in the running, but would not have beaten the winner. Tizzy was three lengths behind Passion Fruit, two lengths ahead of The Masquerader who finished well. Pin Money, who put up a poor fight when tackled, was fifth, followed by Cricket Bat, the Smuggler and Princess Doreen. When picked up, A. Eastwood, rider of Manetho, was unconscious, and after a short examination the doctors rushed him off to St. George’s Hospital. Their opinion was that the lad was very seriously hurt about the head. An inquiry will be held later on into the case of Manetho falling, Eastwood’s evidence being wanted. The Oaks. Mother Superior made the running in the Oaks from Variant, Impossible and Chidden in close order. The pace set was slow, the first half taking 58sec. The order was the same at the end of a mile done in Imin. 49sec. Variant went up then and joined Mother Superior. Once into the straight Variant ran away from Mother Superior and beat her by five lengths. Chidden was four lengths back, well clear of Impossible. The last half-mile was run in 48 3-ssec. The race was run right into Variant’s hands. Short of racing condition, but possessed of great speed, when it came to sprinting she disposed of the opposition easily in the run home. Tunneller, Wonderful and Honest Maid got away very badly in the Ashley Handicap. Top Rank, Sea Fox, Haere Tonu, Maroha and Trumpet Blast were the leaders when the field had gone a furlong. Entering the straight Top Rank, Sea Fox, Silver Step and

Quite Soon were fighting for the lead with Maroha, Sibella and Haere Tonu in behind them. In the run to the post Sea Fox drew out and went on to win by a good two lengths from Quite Soon who was a neck in front of Sibella. Top Rank was a head away, just heading off Haere Tonu and Silver Step with Maroha and Scratchmere Scar next. Cheery Queen set the pace in the Avon Handicap from Fair Weather, Quietly Sam Smith and Fracas. With heads turned for home Quietly challenged Cherry Queen and Sam Smith with Fracas improving his position. Sam Smith and Fracas headed Quietly and after a battle royal Fracas beat Sam Smith by inches. Fair Weather was too lengths away, a neck in front of Quietly. Cheery Queen was a poor fifth, just in front of Emotion. Red Racer was last. The Judical Committee finished the inquiry as to how Manetho came down and it was conclusively proved to them that Manetho, pulling hard, got on to The' Masquerader’s heels in proof whereof The Masquerader’s heels were cut. The latest news about A. Eastwood from St. George’s Hospital is that besides a broken collarbone, it is almost certain that his skull is fractured. He is still deeply unconscious. THE MELBOURNE CUP. PETER PAN A GREAT HORSE. FAILURE OF NEW ZEALANDERS. SIR SIMPER VERY DISTRESSED. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) Sydney, November 7. Commenting on the Melbourne Cup> the-Melbourne Herald says: “Peter Pan proved himself one of the greatest gallopers Australia has produced. At the five furlongs the horse began to pull, still having a great amount of energy in reserve turning into the straight and as soon as he 1 dashed up to the leaders it was evident he had the race won. Sarcherie battled on gamely and was equal to a late challenge from La Trobe. It was remarkable to see the equal favourites, Nightly and Sir Simper, the last two horses to finish. Sir Simper was so distressed that when his rider applied the whip in the straight the horse almost collapsed. The Daily Telegraph says: Peter Pan rose to the greatest heights of his outstanding staying career with his Gen-., tenary Cup victory, which caught the imagination of even hardened racegoers. He left one of the finest Cup fields as though they were a collection of old steeplechasers. Every circumstance of the race was against Peter Pan, but he ploughed through the mua to a three lengths win, while Nightly and Sir Simper were plodding through the mud at little more than a canter over half a furlong in the rear. Never have Melbourne Cup favourites cut up so badly under conditions which were expected to suit them. Sir Simper could hardly drag one foot after another in the last furlong and his mouth was open and he was gasping for breath. Nightly’s failure was not the fault of any breakdown. Rogilla has been scratched for all Flemington engagements. NEW ZEALAND RUNNERS TO-DAY. WOODLACE MAY RACE AT ELLERSLIE. PETER PAN’S WINNINGS. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 7.55 p.m.) Melbourne, Nov. 7. The New Zealand acceptors at Flemington to-morrow are:— Maiden Plate: Cape Lilock. Byron Moore Stakes: Golden Promise, Whernside. Carnival Handicap: Bunsby Gaze. Oaks Stakes: Quarto, Queen Helen, Limyris. Veteran Stakes: Miramond,. Miss Nottava, Upoko Ariki, Oriel, Melisande. Harry Butler, owner-trainer, is considering the suggestion of sending Woodlace to Auckland to race at Ellerslie at the December meeting. Wheriko and Perfect Idea left for New Zealand to-day. Peter Pan took no harm from his Cup race and is running in the Duke of Gloucester Cup on Saturday. Peter Pan’s winnings now total £26,985. The New Zealander Rolovont is under offer to a Western Australian sportsman. Hall Mark and Nightly are likely to start in the C. B. Fisher Plate tomorrow. bowls’ EASTERN SOUTHLAND COMPETITION.
