FRIVOLITY FAIR

ATTRACTIVE STALLS.

A COLOURFUL DISPLAY.

The Orange Hall presented a gay scene last evening when the Frivolity Fair, in aid of the building fund of the Orange Institution, commenced a fournight season. There was a very large crowd present when his Worship the Mayor, Mr John Miller, opened proceedings, and excellent business was reported during the evening by those in charge of the stalls and amusements.

Mr P. B. Barlow, the organizer, succeeded in transforming the hall into a place of beauty and splendour. Bright streamers of blue and yellow predominated in the decoration scheme, while everywhere coloured lights cast a warm glow over stalls and amusement stands. The carnival spirit was in the air, and dull care was cast aside by officials and onlookers alike. The stalls were really something different, it being clearly evident that much time and trouble had been taken over their preparation. They were stocked with a most attractive selection of goods, while those in charge were dressed, in man)’ cases, in appropriate fancy costume. The Mayor congratulated those responsible on the fine display and wished the carnival every success. He paid a tribute to the ladies who had-made so many of the attractive articles on sale c.i the stands. The amusement section _ was very popular, and those controlling the various attractions were kept busy. The official working the chocplate wheel experienced a very heavy night, this interesting machine keeping the crowd in a constant simmer of excitement. Numerous competitions also added to the gala atmosphere. A feature of the fair was the gay costumes worn by many of those selling tickets and conducting competitions. These people mingled with the crowd and provided agreeable splashes of colour. . Miss J. Mackinlay contributed m no small measure towards the. success of the evening with her dancing. In her numbers she revealed definite talent. An orchestra provided bright music during the proceedings, while the Battalion Band gave several selections outside the hall before the fair was officially opened. The fair will be continued to-day when Highland dancing, lightning sketches and selections by the Civic and Pipe bands will be presented. Competitions were won last evening as follows:—Pair of slippers, Nan McKenzie; bed jacket, “L.H.,” Don street; table centre, J.- Hughes, Waikiwi; orange cake, Mr Tapley.
