UNEMPLOYMENT

BOARD’S NEW POLICY. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, November 7. A statement was issued by the acting Minister of Employment (the Hon. J. A. Young) to-day that the Unemployment Board is embarking on a policy of endeavouring to place the unemployed with private employers. The improvement in general conditions has opened up possibilities of associating the functions of labour-placing bureaux proper with the activities of the Unemployment Relief Bureaux. It is recognized that effective work in placing the unemployed in private employment depends very largely on securing the confidence of employers in the recommendations made, and it is intended to exercise more than usual care in selecting officers who will be entrusted with the duty of making contact with employers. The idea will be tried out first only in one or two of the main centres, and if successful will be extended.
