EMPIRE MIGRATION

CONFERENCE CALLED. DOMINION’S OBLIGATIONS. (Per United Press Association.) - Wellington, November 7. To consider the question of Empire migration as it affects New Zealand in relation to its obligations and privileges as a member of the British Commonwealth of Nations, a conference of representatives of the organizations and of individuals is to he held in Wellington on November 21. The conference has been called by Messrs A. Leigh Hunt and C. S. Falconer on behalf of the Dominion Settlement Association and by Messrs W. J. Holdsworth and N. G. Gribble on behalf of the New Zealand Land Settlement and Development League. The visit to the Dominion within the- next few weeks of Mr Malcolm MacDonald, Under-Secretary of Dominion Affairs, has instigated the move. Invitations to the conference state that the question is likely to come under two heads: What action, if any, should be taken by the respective Governments, and what action, if any, can be taken by organizations or groups with or without Government cooperation. In connection with the first head it is considered that steps should be taken to collect data of the Dominion’s resources and arrange to. meet Mr MacDonald, and in connection with the second head, attention is drawn to the report of the Committee of the House of Commons on the subject which the two New Zealand organizations interesting themselves in the subject have had reprinted. The invitation states further that the business of the conference will be to arrange for a permanent organization to care for immigration in. this country. Representatives of primary producers organizations, secondary industries, chambers of commerce, social organizations, churches and district progress organizations and a number of individuals who have been connected with the movements likely to become interested in the recommencement of immigration, have been invited.
