“GLARING SOCIAL EVIL”

FOOTBALL POOL BETTING. CLAUSE DROPPED FROM BILL. (United Press Assn.— Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 5.5 pm.) London, November 5. In the House of Commons on the committee stage of the Betting Lotteries Bill an amendment to restore the clause forbidding football pool betting was strongly supported on the ground that this glaring social evil, to which all football associations were opposed, led to gambling by boys and girls and was now creeping into cricket. It was alleged that pressure was brought _ on the Government to drop the provision. Several Conservatives appealed for a free vote on the question. Sir Jonn Gilmour, the Home Secretary, ignored these and stated that the clause was withdrawn owing to a strong difference among the standing committee. _ The amendment was defeated without a division.
