RIVERSDALE NOTES

ATHLETIC SOCIETY. (From Our Correspondent.) The annual meeting of the Athletic Society was held in the pavilion on Wednesday evening, the president (Mr J. T. Qualter) presiding over the following: Messrs I. Evans, G. McKay, L. Guyton, R. H. Matthews, L. Guyton, E. Kingsbury, J. C. McKenzie, J. C. Macpherson, T. Campbell, A. Campbell, J. Kelly, D. McLennan, W. Paterson, W. Kelly and the secretary, Mr H. Greer. Mr R. H. Matthews took the opportunity of congratulating Mr Qualter on being elected president of the Southland Athletic and Cycling Union. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £4 10/-, this very considered very satisfactory considering the inclement weather for the January meeting. Reed; starter, Mr T. Campbell; starters’ steward, Mr A. Knowles; jumping, Mr T. Wood, Mr F. Shallard; stone and hammer, Messrs R. Matthews and F. Tremaine; dancing, Mrs Wilson; piping, Mr D, Alexander; bellringer and treasurer, Mr E. Kingsbury. The gatekeepers were re-elected and a programme committee consisting of the president, secretary and Messrs J. Kelly, L. Guyton, T. Campbell and G. McKay was appointed to draw up a programme and submit it to a general meeting to be held next Wednesday. A donation of £1 1/- was voted to the Balfour Pipe Band in appreciation of past services. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr Kennedy, Geraldine, and with Mr W. Leitch, Mataura, was passed. Messrs Macphersons Ltd., have donated a trophy for most points in field eVentS> . . The monthly meeting of the P.W.M.U. was held in the church on Thursday afternoon. This being the final meeting of the year a social afternoon was held. The Rev. Newlands presided over a good attendance of members and friends. During the afternoon three competitions were held as follows: The names of the missionaries, Mesdames I. McKay, W. Stevenson, J. Stevenson and Miss E. MacKey and S. Stevenson all tied; motor car competition, Mrs W. Stevenson, Mrs I. Mac Kay and Miss S. Stevenson equal; mental menu competition, Miss M. White and Miss E. MacKay equal. At a suitable interval solos were given by Mrs M. McLay and Misses S. Stevenson and M. White. A collection in aid of the home missionaries Christmas box was taken up. The serving of afternoon tea brought a very enjoyable afternoon to a close. A highly diverting entertainment was staged in the Drill Hall on Friday evening when the High Hitters’ Concert Company, of Five Rivers, staged a fine programme to a large and appreciative audience. The company journeyed to Riversdale to provide an entertainment in aid of the local school funds. The chairman of the social committee (Mr G. Kerr) presided and stated the object of the concert and at the conclusion thanked Mr J. Stewart and all the members of the party for their efforts which were much appreciated by the committee and which had proved so enjoyable to the audience. The following was the programme submitted: Choruses (by party) “Cheer Up, Hitch Your Waggon to a Sunbeam;” duet, Mr and Mrs Brasch; solos, Mrs Brasch, Messrs Brasch, Drummond and Chaplin. Several delightful playettes were portrayed, featuring Gypsy, Hawaiian and camp-fire scenes, showing some excellent scenery and shading effects and with the Gypsy caravan and songs proved very realistic. Excellent choruses were rendered by the party and dainty ballets showing pretty flocking and colouring. Local hits were a feature of the evening causing much merriment. Altogether the fuction proved most enjoyable showing that a vast amount of work was entailed to provide such a well-balanced and varied programme. After the serving of supper a dance was held to excellent music supplied by the orchestra. A meeting of the Golf Club was held in the Plunket Rooms on Wednesday evening, Mr N. N. Griffin presiding. It was decided to continue the summer golf season, the opening day being fixed for Wednesday, November 14. It was resolved to hold competitions fortnightly on Wednesday evenings, and judging by the enthusiasm displayed and the condition of the links the summer season should prove most enjoyable. A euchre party and dance was held in the hall on Saturday evening, the proceeds of which are to provide fruit for the inmates of Gore Hospital for Christmas cheer. A large number participated in the games and at the conclusion the winners proved to be Mrs Lynch and Mrs J. C. McKenzie while Miss D. Green and Mr A. Wilson carried off consolation prizes. The prizes were generously donated by Mrs Denniston and Mr W. McKay. The convener of the function, Mr W. McKay, thanked all for their attendance and support, and after the serving of supper an enjoyable dance was held to music supplied by Mrs Ibbotson, Messrs L. Cody and S. Gordon.
