KNAPDALE NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.) There was a capacity house in the Knapdale Hall when the members of the Tennis Club arranged an evening in honour of Mr D. Cross, prior to his leaving the district to take up farming at Glencoe. The evening was spent in dancing interspersed with musical items. At a suitable interval Mr W. B. Brash, on behalf of the . Tennis Club and district friends, presented the guest of the evening with a solid leather suitcase. In doing so he referred to Mr Cross’s many good qualities and said he had always taken a keen interest in all local affairs, being a first-class tennis player, highly successful as a motor cycle racer and also bringing fame to himself and the district by making and flying a very fine aeroplane. He was the first local young man to gain his pilot’s license. Messrs S. Graham, J. Mattheson, D. Miller, J. Dun, D. Ford and G. Kelly also spoke. Mr Cross suitably replied.' The following contributed musical items, Messrs C. McCray, G. Graham, F. Voight and R. L. Snowden. Miss H. Jaffery was the accompaniste. Music for the dance was supplied by Miss M. Gerken and Messrs G. P. Cross, R. Snowden and R. Crombie. Mr Graham was M.C. The Drama Circle of the Knapdale Women’s Institute held its final evening for the season at the residence of Mrs W. Brash, when a very pleasant evening was spent in play reading and other items. The first tennis match for the Brash Shield was played at Otama last Wednesday, Knapdale meeting Otama. The scores were 10 sets to 6 in favour of Knapdale. Mrs T. McCluskie, Dunedin, is the guest' of Miss A. Wilson, Gold Creek. Miss Kirk, Kelso, spent a few days visiting Mrs G. P. Cross, “The Gables,” Chatton. Mrs L. Newman is at present on a visit to her daughter, Mrs S. J. Irwin, Lochiel. Miss Alice Cross is visiting friends in Canterbury. Miss M. Browning, Gore, is the guest of Mrs D. Gerken.
