WOODLANDS NOTES
OPENING OF BOWLING CLUB. (From Our Correspondent.) There was a large attendance of players and spectators at the official opening of the local bowling green on Wednesday afternoon. The president. Mr N. J. Montgomery, welcomed those present and stated that the attendance augured well for a successful season. Included among the visitors were members of Invercargill, Southland, Northend, Waihopai, Returned Soldiers and Wyndham clubs. In replying to the welcome Mr D. M. Scandrett, president of the Southland Centre, congratulated the local club members on the state of the green and surroundings. He conveyed good wishes from the centre and trusted that this season would be enjoyable to the Woodlands Club members. Before asking Mrs Montgomery’ to roll the first bowl, the president stated that the excellent order of the green and surroundings was due to the conscientious attention paid it by Mr James McKendry. Rink play followed and despite unpleasant weather conditions the players found the playing surface excellent. Farewell Social and Dance. The capacity of the Dacre Hall was taxed when Mr John Curran and family were tendered a farewell social. A pleasant evening was spent in dancing interspersed with items. Leonard’s Orchestra played the music for the dancing, while extras were supplied by Mr and Mrs H. Robertson. The following contributed items: Songs, Mrs Ritchie, Miss Molly Fahey, Messrs J. Burke and H. Robertson; recitations, Mr Cusack. Miss Gormack played several of the accompaniments. The principal speaker of the evening was Mr J. Kerr, who expressed regret that the district was losing the Curran family. During the last 28 years, he said, Mr Curran had lived in Dacre and during that period had served for several terms as a school committeeman and on the Public Hall Committee. He had also taken a keen interest in district affairs and any worthy cause generally had his support. He then presented Mr Curran with a case of pipes and a wallet and each of the five sons with an appropriate gift. He also made a presentation to Miss Paterson. Other speakers were Messrs George Stevenson, H. Burke and J. Burke. Mr James Curran replied on behalf of his father and brothers. Mr D. Macnicol was M.C. for the dancing. Dacre Tennis Club. The first annual meeting of the Dacre Tennis Club was held on Monday. Mr D. Macnicol presided. In giving an outline of last season’s activities Mr Macnicol said that they had reason to be satisfied with the progress made. He expressed his thanks to all who had assisted to make the club a success. Mr D. Macnicol was elected president and Miss E. Scully secretary. It was decided to hold the opening day on Saturday, October 20. The committee was instructed to arrange more inter-club games this season.
