COUSIN BETTY’S LETTER

My dearest Cousins, Congratulations, my dears on your splendid effort! The result of the bazaar is simply splendid and I am more than proud of you all. As some money is still to come in I’m afraid I must disappoint you as to telling you this morning exactly how much money we will have to give the Health Camp Committee, but I venture to say the net profit will be in the vicinity of £BO. Now, I am heartily pleased with that result, and will give you the exact sum next week. The dinner waggon has not yet been drawn, but I expect to have all the books in quite soon, so you will not be kept in suspense much longer. The results of the Baking Competition are: Pikelets—Cousin Daphne Waters. Scones, biscuits, pikelets and seed cake—Mrs Henderson. Waitana. The sheep guessing competition was won by Peter Hargest, Rakauhauka, the weight of the sheep being 113 Jibs.

The tin of biscuits kindly donated by Mrs Swift to the cake stall was won by Mr H. K. Sumpter who had number 27.

The Cup, by the way, goes this year to the Mataura Island Clan who thoroughly deserve their win. Besides having the highest number of marks for entries to the Page, they also worked with unbounded enthusiasm for the bazaar and I know all the other clans will give them three hearty cheers and join with me in congratulating them on their win. Talking of the Clans, my dears, I don’t want you to drift now that the bazaar is over. Although there is no need to hold any more meetings just now, don’t forget that December is fast approaching and we must soon be getting ready for our day at the hospital. I hope you will all remember the Birthday Fund which helps to buy fruit for hospital day. When you see your name in the Many Happy Returns list just send in any little offering, even if it is only a penny and it will all help to swell the fund. And now, my dears, I come to the business of thanking all those who helped us to make the bazaar the success it was. First of all I thank his Worship the Mayor, Mr John Miller, and Mr Hargest for kindly assisting in the opening ceremony and all the stall-holders. It was simply marvellous the way mothers and friends rose to the occasion and worked like trojans. On behalf of you all, my dears, I thank these kind ladies from the bottom of all our hearts. And now here is the list of all the other people who assisted us: Messrs H. and J. Smith, Ltd., J. M. Brown, Ltd., Fleming’s, Ltd., Bell’s, Southland Milk Products, Oyster Merchants (Bluff), Boyds Bros, and Kirk, Hobb’s, Anonymous, A. C. Millars, Self Help, Kelman’s, Adams Bruce, Symon’s Bakery, Lang’s, Matheson’s Ltd., Baxter’s, Thomson’s Butchery, McGill’s, McKenzie’s, John Edmond’s, The Central Butchery, Messrs Ronalds, Sands, A. Sutherland, Gardiner, Mansfield, Sumpter and Reddingtpn. I think that is the complete list, my dears. I have thanked other helpers in early pages and I think that I shall now say good-bye for this week and conclude with one great big hearty “Thank you!”

Heaps of love from

jhfhf

P.S. Next week we will have a Left Over Page and I will also have the amounts made by the various stalls.—C.B.
