FIRE AT HAMILTON
GIRLS’ HOSTEL DAMAGED. (Per United Press Association.) Hamilton, July 17. One of the buildings comprising “Sonning,” the Hamilton High School Girls’ Hostel, was swept by fire at 5.30 this morning, only the prompt action of the fire brigade preventing the spread of the flames to the adjacent quarters. The outbreak was noticed by a passing milkman who gave the alarm and when the brigade arrived the fire was running right through the central bungalow which was used as sitting rooms by the staff. Two leads of 500 feet had to be run up the long drive by the brigade who were successful in getting the flames under control and preventing the flames spreading to the buildings close at hand. Fortunately the 28 girl boarders were sleeping in quarters some distance away from the fire and these were threatened at no stage. There were no signs of panic. The building was insured for £350 and the contents, which included the teachers’ own furniture, were insured for £75.
