NAZI CLEAN-UP

FURTHER VICTIMS CATHOLIC YOUTH LEADER SHOT ATTEMPTED ESCAPE (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) London, July 16. The Berlin correspondent of The Times says that the recent clean-up involved the death of Adalbert Probst, leader of the principal Catholic youth organization, who was arrested while visiting a friend, Monsignor .Wolker, general president of the Catholic youth organization. Probst was removed in a motor car and never seen again. The secret police subsequently notifed Monsignor Wolker that Probst was shot while attempting to escape and asked him to break the news to the relatives. It is now revealed that those executed include the Bavarian Storm Troop leaders Schmid and Schneidhuber, while Obernitz, a prominent Nazi, has been removed from the post of police president of Nuremburg, but retains the group leadership of the Storm, Troops. General Daluege announces that he is not changing the organization of the Storm Troops, but is merely reorganizing them and will deal with all shortcomings. MORE REVELATIONS BERLIN POLICE CHIEF SHOT. VON PAPEN’S PECULIAR POSITION. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 9.5 p.m.) London, July 17. The Berlin correspondent of the Daily Telegraph says that gradually details are leaking out of the removal of persons apparently unconnected with the alleged plots which led to terror and evacuations on June 30. One of these was Captain von Kessel, departmental chief of the Berlin secret police. A motor car containing Nazi guards drove up to his office and told von Kessel’s woman secretary to sit in the car till they came out. She heard shots and when the guards left she. found von Kessel’s body leaning against . a cabinet in which he kept confidential documents. It is persistently rumoured that Jung, who was a friend of Herr von Papen and the reputed author of the latter’s Marburg speech, has been shot. Others believed to have been killed include Baron von Gleicher, who belonged to Herr von Papen’s conservative group, Engels, a former vice-president of the Breslau police, and Stutzel, ex-Minister of the Interior in Bavaria, who incurred Nazi enmity by banning all uniformed political guards in 1930. The Berlin correspondent of the Daily Mail says that Herr von Papen tendered his resignation no fewer than five times. Herr Hitler each time refused to accept it, pointing out that a German Minister could not withdraw without permission. Herr von Papen desires to see the President, with whom he has been on very friendly terms for many years, but thus far his applications for an audience have been refused. It is stated that Herr von Papen’s absence from the Reichstag on July 13 was intended to direct attention to his extraordinary position.
