COUNCILLOR AND SECRETARY.

To the Editor. Sir, —I read with great interest the Hon. T. O’Byrne’s address in the Upper House, especially his suggestion for a five-day week of six hours a day, this making the work go round. Now that he is drawing a Government salary, it should afford him a splendid opportunity of putting his suggestions into practice, by dropping some of his secretaryships of which he holds at least three: the Sawmill Workers’ Union, the Dairy Assistants’ Union and the Dairy Factory Managers’ Union. The Sawmill Workers’ Union alone gives quite a good living wage, while the other two combined should give quite a good living for another man. Can the hon. gentleman attend to all these duties in 30 hours per week? If so, then he is grossly overpaid, if not then let him practise what he preaches and make the work go round—l am, etc., SHORT OF WORK.
