WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

SOUTHLAND FEDERATION.

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE.

At a meeting of the executive of the Southland Federation of Womens Institutes, Mrs E. G. Wilson presided over the following members: —Mesdames A. G. Copland, J. Craigie, J. Copland, J. H. McLeod, R. S. White and C. H. Hargest. During Miss Dunn s absence on holiday, Mrs J. Copland was appointed secretary. The prize-money for ■ the various classes at the Winter Show was distributed. A special prize for the best cured ham was awarded to Mrs Hayward (Waimumu). . A letter was received from Miss E. Wesney (secretary of the Drama Festival Committee) enclosing a statement showing a credit balance of £49 5/9 from the recent Drama Festival. The treasurer reported that the door takings at the Winter Show amounted to £22, and it was anticipated that after all expenses were paid there would be a satisfactory credit balance. The half-yearly council meeting of the federation was discussed, and it was decided that it be held early in October, and that preliminary notices be posted to each branch, requesting that remits be forwarded to the secretary not later than August 25. It was suggested that the president and the delegate to the conference (Mrs C. H. Hargest) visit those institutes which would not be represented at the conference, and give a resume of the business transacted. The president expressed her keen appreciation of the whole-hearted cooperation of the members of the executive and their special committees in their work for the success of the recent Drama Festival and Winter Show. These committees had shown the true institute spirit, and members had given very valuable support to each undertaking. Special votes of thanks were passed to the judges at the Winter Show, to Messrs J. Martin and J. Mallow for their expert assistance in erecting the staging, to the Gore Municipal Band for supplying music during the evening, to Mrs Hodge for supplyng cups of tea, to the Girl Gudes for their valuable assistance, and to the donors of the trophies for the display competition (Mr D. McDougall, M.P., and Mrs A. G. Copland). A vote of thanks and appreciation was passed to Miss K. M. Dunn, the secretary, to whom a large measure of the successful organization of the Show was due.
