WAIANIWA NOTES

BASKETBALL CLUB’S DANCE. (From Our Correspondent.) The basketball girls held another of their popular dances in the hall on Saturday evening, Music being supplied by Mrs Toole (piano) and Mr McDonald (accordion) while the duties of M.C. were ably carried out by Mr D. S. King. Amongst those present were: Mr and Mrs J. Young, Misses King (2), Young, Forrest, Wilson, Rizzi, Ronald, Bissett, Whitelaw, Stevenson, Cartwright (2), Bruland (2), Townshend, Powell (Wallacetown), Hill (Thornbury); Messrs King, Whitelaw, Bennett, Price, Hunter, Smithies, Lindsay, Kennedy, Grieve, Toole, Cartwright, Hodson, McPhedran, Robertson, Rizzi, McDonald (3, Otahuti), Jackson (Wright’s Bush), Hill, McNeill (2, Thornbury), Rance, Gibb, Strang (2, Waimatuku), Donnavori (Dunedin), Town (Heddon Bush), Kerr, Kelleher, Saunders (Spar Bush). The basketball team journeyed to Wallacetown on Saturday and after a very even game were defeated by 18 goals to 15. Mrs E. Mortimer controlled the game. On Thursday afternoon a presentation was tendered Mrs McGaw and her daughter Yvonne, by the staff and pupils of the local school. Mrs McGaw, who has been on the staff for the past three years, left on Friday to take up a position in the Middle School. Miss Gwen Ronald, on behalf of the pupils, presented Yvonne with a pair of nappa gloves while Master Ronald Young presented Mrs McGaw with a black handbag as a token of esteem in which they were held by the children. Mr Mason, on behalf of the teachers, then presented Mrs McGaw with a book. Mrs McGaw suitably replied. The monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute was held in the school room on Wednesday evening, the president, Mrs Mason, presiding over a large attendance of members. The toffeemaking competition judged by Mrs Galloway resulted as follows: Miss Molly King 1, Mrs M. Millbum 2, Mrs W Steans and Mrs, Ogilvy equal 3. Hostesses for the supper were Mesdames W Steans, E. Steans and N. McNaughton.
