FIRE IN WAREHOUSE
HEAVY DAMAGE TO STOCKS. (Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, June 8. Fire swept through the store of Davidson and Co., Ltd., general wholesale grocery merchants, in Lichfield street, at a very early hour this morning. It is estimated that stocks valued at £2OOO were destroyed. The building is owned by Royd Bros, and Kirk, and it was damaged to the extent of over £lOOO. The damage would have been considerably greater but the Fire Brigade, called from the Central Station a few doors down the street, made a good save. The firemen who worked inside the building were in considerable danger as the goods stored there were inflammable, while the roof overhead was breaking up and falling all the time. In spite of this the brigade was successful after a two-hour fight in checking the fire. The building was insured for £5OOO and the stock of Davidson and Co. for £lB5O.
