TAPANUI NOTES

PLUNKET SOCIETY. (From Our Correspondent.) At the meeting of the West Otago branch of the Plunket Society held on Friday afternoon in the Bible Class Hall, Tapanui, after the routine business had been gone through, Plunket / Nurse Dale gave an instructive, address on “Fresh Air and Sunlight” illustrating by photographs of the open air life led by patients in Switzerland at an open air sanatorium. While playing football at school on Wednesday afternoon Talbot Allen, a son of Mr and Mrs Allen, Pomahaka, had his collarbone broken. Dr. Robertson attended to the injured boy, who was then conveyed to his home. In the Meat Board’s fat lamb competition for Eastern Southland, Mr W. Kirk, Tapanui Flat, was placed second in the London judging, Mr J. J. Burnett, Waikoikoi, being third in this competition. The Tapanui Cricket Club held its third progressive euchre and dance social in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Wednesday evening. Mrs W. Kirk won the ladies’ prize and Mr J. Rodger was successful in the draw for the gentlemen’s prize. A farewell was given to Mr and Mrs O’Donnell, and family, at their residence “Moyola,” Heriot, by their friends before their departure from the Heriot district. Dancing in the big dining room, and songs, etc., kept all amused, and during the evening Mr G. M. Carter made the presentation to the guests of the evening of a handsome dinner set. Mr Calder said that Mr O’Donnell hud proved a most capable manager at “Moyola,” keeping the farm, stock and implements in first-class order, and showing himself a good farmer. Mrs O’Donnell’s hospitality and kindness were known to all, and the young people had helped with basketball, football and all sports in the district. They would all be much missed by their many friends. Mr O’Donnell thanked district residents for their kindness both in giving such a handsome gift and during their stay in Heriot. Supper was then served by the ladies, after which dancing was resumed.
