Another pioneer of motoring and of motor racing, Mr S. F. Edge, is engaged on a book of reminiscences. A collection of some four hundred different editions of “Robinson Crusoe,” in European and Oriental languages, was sold in London recently. Miss Margaret Yonge, author of “A Christian Garland,” is a cousin of ’ Charlotte M. Yonge, the Victorian novelist who wrote “The Heir of Redclyffe.” Sir Max Pemberton has nearly finished his official Life of Sir Henry Royce, of Rolls-Royce fame. Sir Max himself has been a motorist since the 'nineties. Miss Diana Darling, daughter of Lord Darling, has written her new novel, “Remembered Hills,” under her own name. Previously she has used the pseudonym of “Janet I’ng.” A one-page letter written by Thackeray ii. praise of Charlotte Bronte’s “Jane Eyre” was sold in London last week for £6OO. Altogether fifty-two Thackeray items from the Comte de Suzannet’s library fetched £2465. For a presentation copy of “Esmond” £3OO was paid, and £125 for Thackeray’s own copy with many corrections in his handwriting. His original drawing for a plate in “Vanity Fair” fetched £l5O. Messrs Chatto and Windus announce “Beyond the Mexique Bay,” by Aldous Huxley. This is the outcome of a tour in the Caribbean Sea, Guatemala, and Mexico. It is a travel book, but Huxley finds time also to stand and stare, to talk the world’s war-fever, for instance, or of artistic .tradition, or of the problem of how to evolve a new society. William Meyer-Foerster, who has died in Berlin at the age of seventytwo, was the author of the play, “Old Heidelberg.” Since its first production over thirty years ago, it has been staged in twenty-two different countries, in many languages, including Chinese, Japanese and Afrikaans. The author himself never saw his play, for his sight began to fail during the first rehearsals, and soon he became totally blind.
