NEW ZEALAND TO ENGLAND
Elizabeth Milton evidently is a New Zealand author. She wrote “Waimana,” an Anglo-New Zealand romance and now we have “Strange Horizon,” the story of a New Zealand girl who marries and is transplanted to the strange conditions of the English country life. Michael Trent and Gabrielle Deverill were married in ■ Auckland and sailed two days later for England. A rough trip did not help ; her to meet the new conditions of < English life and ’the antagonism of ‘ Michael’s family who see crudities in 1 Gabrielle. When Michael is called ! back to New Zealand, this antagonism t develops and finally Gabrielle is con- , vinced that her husband really loves ’ Christine, an English girl adopted into i the family. Gabrielle goes away, i travelling on the Continent and there i the English wife of an Italian count, < attracted by her, gives her those re- 1 flnements which previously she had i lacked. Then she learns that the evi- 1 dence which had convinced her of 1 Michael’s affair with Christine was a 1 deliberate concoction. At once she 1 rushes back to England, and this f beautifully changed Gabrielle soon finds i herself in his arms. It is an interest- . ing story and discloses a hand much c firmer than that which wrote “Wai- r mana.” t “Strange Horizon” (Messrs Mills ; and Boon, Ltd., London). c
