A. AND P. ASSOCIATION

MEETING OF DIRECTORS. DEFICIT OF £152 ON WINTER SHOW. A meeting of directors of the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held yesterday, there being present Messrs W. R. Ronald (chanman), D. Marshall, H. Carswell, J. Milne, A. S. Holms, J. McCrostie, J. Bateman, S. T. Evans, T. Hamilton, A. Horne, R. Swale, G. S. Young, A. Campbell and J. Young. Commenting on the district fat lamb competition Mr D. Marshall drew attention to the committee’s attitude regarding the treatment of the lambs which were to be killed. The association had been of the opinion that these lambs should be exhibited at the Summer Show whereas the committee had contended that the lambs should be taken direct from the paddock to the works. He personally considcied that Southland’s success in the competition was largely due to the fact that the lambs were taken direct from . their mothers to the works. The association, he submitted, should adopt the committee’s suggestion officially. The secretary was instructed to note the matter for future reference.

The secretary reported that a meeting of representatives of the A. and P. Association in Southland, had been held during the Winter Show to discuss the control of side-showmen. It had been decided to affiliate for this year with the North Island Federation in order to secure the licensing of sideshowmen. At the same time the representatives had considered that the time was ripe for the formation of a South Island Federation.

The secretary read a letter from the Otago A. and P. Association drawing attention to the conference of South Island associations to be held in Dunedin on June 5 when the matter could be further discussed. It was decided to affiliate with the North Island Federation for this year. It was decided also to be represented at the Dunedin conference, the president (Mr Ronald) and the secretary being appointed the association’s delegates. A deficit of £l5l 18/3 on the Winter Show was disclosed in a report submitted by the secretary who mentioned that the 1933 Winter Show’s deficit had been £264 5/-. The returns for the Thursday and Friday had been up to expectations, but Saturday had been disappointing. The returns from the entertainments had also been below expectations. The statement of receipts and payments disclosed that the door money totalled £265 2/-, the guessing competitions £lB 14/-, entry fees £l6B 15/-, sale of space £B2 12/-, catalogues £5 7/9 and donations £65 12/-. On the expenditure side the principal items were: prize money £4lB 11/9, advertising and printing £9l 9/2, wages £lOO 19/3, timber and material £lO 12/1, lighting and fittings £26 11/9, allowance to garden club £24, deficit' on evening entertainments £l7 18/5. The president said that the directors had done their best and the deficit was not due to any lack of effort, on their part. Considering that the association lost on the average about £2OO a year through the Winter Show the directors iwould have to seriously consider its discontinuance.

The possibility of reducing the prize money was suggested by Mr A. S. Holms.

After a brief discussion the matter was dropped without any resolution being passed.
