GORGE ROAD NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.) The football season opened last Saturday afternoon when the local team met Pirates seconds in a friendly game. Both teams were short and owing to the heavy rain first class football was impossible, although it served the purpose of a good “pipe-opener.” The final scores, 25—13 in favour of Pirates, was a pretty fair indication of the strength of the two teams. The following scored for Pirates: Mitchell (two tries), Knight (two tries), Jones (one try) and Glen Thomas (two tries and a potted goal) while for Gorge Road W. Johnston, J. McCallum and B. Niederer each scored a try, W. Johnston converting two of them. Mr A. Anderson controlled the game. After the match the Pirates team were entertained to tea in the hall, and later to a smoke concert, the president of the Gorge Road Club (Mr J. T. Lewis) presiding. The second annual meeting of the Gorge Road branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held on Saturday evening, the president (Miss I. Beck) presiding over a large attendance of members. The president thanked the members for their - support during her term of office, and mentioned the loss to the branch in Mrs Niederer’s departure from the district. The branch held four successful entertainments during the year, and although the credit balance of £4 18/7 was slightly less than last year, members had to take into account that they now paid levies on subscriptions and that they had donated several sums to worthy causes. Altogether the year’s work was most satisfactory. The election of officebearers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: President, Miss I. Beck; vice-pr .‘sidents, Mesdames Monteath, Swale and D. Stewart; secretary and treasurer, Miss E. R. Swale; advisory members, Mesdames Swale and P. Ryan; delegates to Southland executive, the president and Mesdames Beck and Swale. A committee was formed of those present. The first lay reading was fixed for April 28. A baking competition was won by Miss Stevenson, Miss Gray being second,
