ANGLING
COMPETITION AT MATAURA. (From Our Correspondent). A challenge issued by the paper mill employees and accepted by the Mataura Angling Club was put into effect over the week-end when contingents of equal strength representing both institutions, equipped with all the gear legally permitted to lure the wily trout, set out at an early hour for the banks of district streams. The weather remained fine, though somewhat threatening during the hours of fishing, but some very fair baskets were returned at the weigh-in. As its tributaries were generally in low condition, the Mataura river suffered the brunt of the attack and yielded almost the whole of the grand total of 90 fish which were taken on the fly, minnow and worm. In view of formidable opposition the club team put up a creditable performance in weighing in 30 fish, scaling 361 b Boz. The mill representatives’ collective creel produced 60 trout weighing 581 b 14oz which entitled them to the honours. The heaviest basket was secured by Mr R. Sharp, who brought in 18 fish weighing 161 b 7oz. Mr J. Anderson tabled the heaviest trout, a nice sea-run female of 61b, cleaned. In accordance with a decision reached by the executive of the club, the entire catch will be distributed among the donors of prizes in recognition of their generosity. The following are the results:—
