LEAVE OF ABSENCE

MR D. M. RAE’S APPLICATION. SUPPORT FROM EDUCATION BOARD. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, April 11. The Auckland Education Board today again criticized the action of the Education Department for refusing to allow Mr D. M. Rae, principal of the Auckland Training College, leave on full salary while absent abroad under a Carnegie Scholarship offer. Mr Rae in a letter said he had now applied for eight months’ leave on half salary. The chairman, Mr T. U. Wells, said he had discussed Mr Rae’s original request with the Director of Education, but he could do nothing, as Cabinet had decided that no highly paid officer should he given leave of absence on salary. He thought it deplorable that a man of Mr Rae’s qualifications, who had done so much for education, should not be able to take advantage of the scholarship offer. To ask him to pay his own expenses was asking too much. The board decided t-o support Mr Rae’s present application. DEPARTMENT ASSENTS MR RAE LEAVING IN MAY. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, April 11. Eight months’ leave on half pay, from May 1, has been granted to Mr D. M. Rae, principal of the Auckland Training College, by the Education Department, to enable him to take advantage of the offer of a travelling scholarship of 2000 dollars by the Carnegie Corporation, to study educational methods in the United States afid in Great Britain. Mr Rae will leave by the Aorangi for Vancouver on May 1. He will spend about six weeks in the United States, and will then go to England, and later to the Continent. He will return to Auckland at the end of the year. A former application for leave on full salary was declined, the department stating that leave could be taken without salary. However, pending the re-opening in 1935 of the Auckland Training College, Mr Rae was allotted inspectorial duties in the Auckland education district.
