BASKETBALL

EASTERN SOUTHLAND SUBASSOCIATION. ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Eastern Southland Basketball Sub-Association was held on Monday night at Gore. Miss Woodhead presiding over an attendance of six delegates and the secretary (Miss E. Parrish). The fifth annual report stated: The 1933 season commenced with seven affiliated clubs entering 11 teams. It is to be regretted that more interest was not evinced by senior players to enable clubs to enter a greater number of A grade teams. Only four teams took part in this section, resulting in lack of competition. St. Patricks had little difficulty in retaining possession of the basketball challenge cup for a further term. St. Patricks 2 and High School tied as runners-up. The first round of the B grade was won by Mataura I with Waimumu second. At the close of the first round the newly-formed Mandeville Club affiliated with the association and entered one team in the B grade. All teams were then rearranged into two sections of six in each, Mataura I and Ex-High transferring from B grade to A. The winners in B grade second round were Waimumu, with High School as run-ners-up. We congratulate all these teams on their well-deserved success. The opening of the season was marked with a tournament on April 26. This was played in two grades, St. Patricks II and High School tieing in the A grade. Unfoidunately the weather conditions prevented the finish of the B grade, which closed with Mataura 1 in the lead. Eight teams from Eastern Southland partook in the June 3 tournament at Invercargill. Although not meeting with success, the experience gained was valuable. The usual representative fixtures were played during the season, but unfortunately Eastern did not acquit themselves so well as senior players. The first match took place at Invercargill on August 2, against Southland second grade, the latter winning by 21 to 3. On the same evening several teams also took part in a knock-out tournament at Invercargill, which proved very enjoyable. Two teams from Central Association, a senior and junior, met two Eastern teams at Gore on August 23. The senior match was closely contested and the first half especially provided some exciting basketball. The game ended with a score of 29—12 in Central’s favour. Central also won the junior match by 20—8. The president, Miss Woodhead, in moving the adoption of the report, referred to the interest taken in the game throughout the district, indications pointing to an even more successful season than in the past. The sub-association was in a very satisfactory financial position. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The election of officers resulted: President, Miss M. Woodhead; vice-presi-dents, Miss E. Parrish and Mr B. Brownlie; secretary and treasurer, Miss E. Parrish (pro. tem.)

It was decided to commence competition matches on May 2, entries from clubs to be in the secretary’s hands by April 21. The affiliation fee was fixed at the same as last year, viz., two or more teams, 12/6, one team, 7/6. A clause in the rules for New Zealand tournament play, which affects Southland sub-associations was referred to by Miss Woodhead. The clause stated: “That each association shall be entitled to enter one team for the tournament, but that where a major association has affiliated to it one or more sub-associations it shall be

allowed to enter a second team, drawn from the players in these sub-associa-tions, in the second grade.” Miss Woodhead said the matter had been fully discussed by the Southland Association, and it had been decided that the various sub-associations would play each other for the honour of filling the entry of a second team in the New Zealand tournament.
