KENNINTON NOTES

TENNIS TOURNAMENT. (From Our Correspondent.) On Saturday afternoon the Kennington Tennis Club helds its annual singles tennis tournament, but in place of a ladies and a men’s championship as in former years this year’s function was on a handicap basis. The handicapping and general management was carried out by Mr L. Horder. In the ladies’ section Miss Mary Graham, who has been playing top lady for the “A” team the greater part of the season, won the final after a very close game with Miss I. Henderson, to whom she was giving two points. _ In the men’s section J. McLew, the limit man, won. The entries were small, but the standard of play was excellent for club competition. The following are detailed results (all matches being played 20 points up):— Ladies’ Section:—Miss I. Henderson (-5) defeated Mrs J. Ewart (scr) 20—14; Mrs J. Fox (scr) defeated Miss R. Graham (-5) 20-14; Miss M. Graham (-10) defeated Miss J. Falconer (scr) 20—18. Semi-final:—Miss I. Henderson (-5) defeated Mrs J. Fox (scr) 20—18; Final:—Miss M. Graham (-2) defeated Miss I. Henderson 20 —18. Men’s Section:—J. McLew (scr) defeated A. A. Cook (-5) 20—19; T. Lyall (-5) defeated G. Thompson (scr) 20—14; S. T. Henderson (scr) defeated T. Lyall (-5) 20—15. Final: J. McLew defeated S. J. Henderson 20—19. Gift Evening. Miss Nellie Crombie, who is to be married this week, was the guest of honour at a gift evening in the Public Hall at Kennington on Thursday evening. At a suitable interval the chairman, the Rev. Mr Thompson, said they were gathered to honour a representative of

one of the pioneer families of the district, who had for long years endeared themselves to all with whom they came in contact. Their guest of that evening would be missed from Kennington, but all joined in congratulating her on the step she was taking and wished her every happiness in the future. He then asked Miss Crombie to accept the many beautiful and useful gifts. Miss Crombie was presented with a beautiful bouquet by Agnes Darragh. Mr J. Jones, of Kapuka, in replying on behalf of Miss Crombie, thanked Mr Thompson for his kind remarks and her many friends for the beautiful gifts. During the evening items were contributed by Messrs Moncur and Hain, a duet and an accordion solo D. Millar. Mr L. Horder acted as accompanist. Music for dancing was supplied by J, Henderson and D. Millar.
