The professional lightweight boxing contest between Archie Hughes (Auckland) and Jack Fitzgerald (Australia"! ended in a draw, the judges disagreeing and the referee giving the decision, which met with a very mixed reception. Fitzgerald proved himself the cleverest defensive boxer seen in Auckland for years, his opponent being at a loss to know how to hit him. Whenever Fitzgerald chose to open out he piled up the points with a straight left, varied occasionally with a right cross, and he appeared to hold a comfortable margin at the finish.
