WOODLANDS NOTES

RAINFALL FOR MARCH. (From Our Correspondent.) The total rainfall registered at Woodlands during March was 4.71 in., with rain on 19 days, compared with 3.11 in, for 16 days for the corresponding month last year. A survey over the records of several past years reveals the fact that the rainfall for March is most irregular, and the significance of this fact to the farmers is that it is the main factor in making grain growing in Southland such a gamble. It is a very rare occurrence to have any kind of crop spoiled by unfavourable weather conditions during growth in this province, but it is the climatic condiitons prevailing during the ripening and harvesting period, which for grain crops is the month of March, that is the determining factor as to whether the crop will be good or a poor one. Tennis Dance. The grand victory ball which the local club intend holding on Tuesday evening to commemorate their victory in the combined districts competition promises to be a fitting finale to a successful season, for the members are leaving no stone unturned in endeavouring to make the function a momentous one. Ex-Pupils’ Association. At a meeting of the Woodlands ExPupils’ Association on Saturday evening, it was decided that the election of office-bearers be left ovei’ till some future date, so, in the meantime, Mr M. P. Schmidt, as president, and Mr J. S. Sadlier, jun., as secretary, carry on. The ball run by the association showed a profit financially, as well as being a social success, with the result that the association has over £22 in credit which is a most satisfactory position.
