IN TOWN AND OUT

NEWS OF THE DAY Ducks arc Plentiful. If the number of wild ducks to be observed flying above the Oreti river and its environs is any indication of the sport offering on the “Glorious First” shooters should secure excellent bags. Flocks of hundreds have been common in recent days, particularly near Lochiel. * ♦ * * A Pig Among Tombstones. A man who purchased a pig in one of the salerooms last Friday discovered that bringing home the bacon was no easy task. The animal made a bid for liberty and was so far successful that it reached the yard of a monumental sculptor in Kelvin street before its pursuers surrounded it. To make the porker a prisoner, proved, however, much harder than it looked. In and out among the tombstones it dashed with • boys and men making vain snatches at it. Undex- the outspread wings of guardian angels, beneath the chubby limbs of cherubs it twisted and turned. The army of hunters grew, but still the quarry eluded them. When it thought it had exploited the statuary to the full the pig dashed through a fence into the adjoining property, only to be cornered and captured. * Fatal Fall Down Well. A tragedy occurred about 5 p.m. last evening when Frederick Longman, married, aged 58, a painter residing with his family in Gordon street, Waikiwi, slipped and fell head first down a well on his property. The well contained three feet of water, and when Longman was extricated a few minutes latex- by his son and a neighboux- he was dead. About the well, which was five feet deep and two feet in diameter, feet marks were afterwards observed showing where the deceased had slipped and fallen in. The mishap occurred very suddenly. The deceased’s wife was resting at the time and the family were about the premises. Suddenly a cry. “Arthur, come quick. Dad’s in the well,” was heard and the deceased’s son assisted by a neighbour, Mr L. D. Manson, lifted him out, but life was extinct. An inquest will be held this afternoon.
