SPORTING

NOTES BY SIR MODRED. South Canterbury Jockey Club Autumn meeting handicaps are due on Wednesday, April 11. Mr W. T. Hazlett may be represented at Epsom Turf Club (Melb.) fixture on Saturday. The King’s Cup (one and a-half miles) contest will attract at Randwick this afternoon. It is now generally admitted that Rightly is the best juvenile for the N.Z. season. Dunedin owner, Mr J. M. Samson, has won six races at Riccarton this season. Harold Logan and Red Shadow may face at Thames T.C. meeting due on April 14. Wirra Walla, a trotting Derby winner, is a son of crack performer Walla .Walla. It is stated that Kiltowyn bled badly after racing in Auckland Easter Handicap. Purchased as a yearling, at 30gns to Win £1565 in stakes, Kiltowyn may be retired. The A.J.C. St. Lcger has been won by three Limonds, viz., Limerick, Veiljnond, Limarch. Entries for Forbury Park Trotting Club’s Winter meeting are due on Monday, April 16. Ex-New Zealander, Mr E. J. Watt, has been elected to the committee of the Australian Jockey Club. Sydney winner Theo (Limond— Mirabella II.) cost Mr Moss 650gns at Trentham Sales. Defunct Australian sire Rossendale’s progeny v.'on 480 races of the value of £182,000. The progeny of Maprilander Lochiel, numbering 461 winners, secured 1162 races and £142,769 in prizes. Local horses Ruling Light, Chief Light and Irish Chieftain were entered for Epsom (Melb.) races to-day.

At the Hawera Trotting Club’s Easter meeting the gate returns for two days increased by £lO4 10/-.

Under win and place wagering the machine returns at Hawera T.C. meeting increased by £3765.

Four-year-old gelding Dracula, by Arrowsmith, displayed galloping ability at Riverton on Tuesday.

Chhota raced disappointingly at Riverton, but there will come a time some day for her.

Quite a number of juvenile and older novices raced at Riverton promise well for future events.

There are seekers after programmes for Otautau Racing Club’s meeting arranged for April 28.

Prior to leaving Melbourne for Sydney Hall Mark was stated to be labelled for the King’s Cup run to-day.

Although he did not prove equal to winning at Riverton, Dodge ran good races.

His owner has expressed his determination not to over-race All Humbug, permitting him to build up.

Canterbury reinsman C. S. Donald, piloted eight winners at Hawera trots, and F. J. Smith (Auckland) steered six.

The crack square-gaited trotting mare, Worthy Queen, is held on lease from Mr Corrigan by trainer J. Shaw.

The performance of Walla Walla and Auburn Lad in New Zealand will confirm our light harness friends across the Tasman Sea in their claim that the sire of the pair, Globe Derby', is the champion stud success in Australia.

New Zealand-bred gelding Araunah, by Hunting Song—Rewanga, who let his connections down when first taken to Melbourne and then changed hands, won the Sherwood Highweight Handicap, £3OO (6f.) at Moonee Valley, on March 24, for owner-trainer T. McGrath, defeating a large field and scoring as first selection.

On the second day of the Hawera Trotting Club's Easter meeting the principal event Waimate Plains Handicap, £2OO and case of cutlery valued at £25, class 4.40 (2m.), was won by four-year-old gelding Worthy Light, by Worthy Bond—lllumination, in 4.36, driven by his ex-English trainer F. J. Smith, of Auckland.

The West Australian Turf Club committee has framed a regulation providing that horses racing in the metropolitan area must be shod on the racecourse with ordinary aluminium rac-ing-plates or steel plates of the approved type, three-eighths of an inch thick.

The running of Silver Scorn in Sydney points to the correctness of the contention of New Zealanders who knew her best to the effect that she has been too leniently treated in Australia in the matter of galloping on the tracks. Recent consistent racing may enable the Silverado mare to make a fair showing in the King’s Cup (IJm.) to-day.

In addition to spending princely sums in supporting the turf in England, Miss Dorothy Paget, owner of the Liverpool Grand National Steeplechase winner, Golden Miller, has shown a keen interest in motor racing, and she has invested a huge amount of money in the purchase of racing-cars.

Queenslander B. Rosen, who has ridden many winners in his travels in Australia, New Zealand, France and England, has been doing well in India of late. At Madras on February 17 his score was four wins, two seconds and a third. The previous Saturday Rosen won three races. When in this country there were people, who should have known better, but did not, who whispered and hinted to the effect that the Aussie could not ride, etc., etc. Rosen became aware of this fact and resented it deeply, but time brings its own revenge, the result being that his detractors have been confounded by the Queenslander’s success in France, England and India.

The will of Tod Sloan was filed at Los Angeles last month. Sloan was once reputed to be worth £200,000, but after his death his estate was valued at £l9OO, including a mining claim and his autobiography. Neither of these might have been of quite the value placed against, them. Sloan left everything to his daughter.

The smart New Zealand-bred filly Queen Helen, by Chief Ruler—Helen, who defeated the crack Australian-bred youngster filly, Arachne, by Corban— Welkin Queen, in the Easter Plate (7f.) at Randwick this week, cost Mr W. R. Kemball 55 guineas as a yearling at the N.Z. National Yearling Sales at Trentham last season. Queen Helen, who was

in receipt of 71b from her penalized rival, had previously been racing well in Melbourne. Trained by G. Jones, she comes of a great galloping family, as her dam, Helen, is by Limond from Bonny Portland, by Boniform. As Helen is also a half-sister to Reremoana, Lady Bentinck (dam of Belvoir) and Lady Cavendish (dam of Golden Hair) it can readily be understood that it is no idle claim to class Queen Helen as the descendant of a brilliant Maoriland galloping tribe.

With average luck, it is not too much to expect the Riccarton-trained ’chaser Speakeasy to furnish into a prominent cross-country performer, as he was a green novice when he recently embarked on a Southland campaign. He is capable of putting forth striking jumping efforts, while he can gallop well across the flat, but he has yet to season and harden up to the stem career ahead of him. The Night Raid gelding is of the right type to coach into a winner of valuable steeplechases, but, in the meantime, he creates the impression that he awaits the services of a determined and vigorous horseman to awaken him to a sense of his responsibilities. He may be found in improved shape when the D.J.C. Winter fixture eventuates in June, with the National meeting to follow in August.

An offer of 1000 guineas by the Flemington trainer S. Masters for the Brazen colt Generous has been refused by H. R. Telford (says the Sydney Morning Herald). It is understood that Telford also refused an offer of 1100 guineas from an Indian buyer. The reserve on the colt is 1500 guineas. Generous, who cost £375 as a yearling, has shown great promise. He won a division of the Calliope Handicap at Moonec Valley, ran prominently in a division of the Gibson Carmichael Stakes at Flemington, and was beaten by only half a head by Dark Sky in the first division of the Alma Stakes at Caulfield.

The New Zealand-bred colt Theo, one of G. Price’s successful youngster pupils of the current season, is expected to develop into a valuable stayer for Mr E. Moss and he is undoubtedly bred to this end. The son of Limond (imp.) is out of Mirabelle II (imp.) by Kroonstad from a mare (ranking as a halfsister to All Black, sire of Desert Gold. Nigger Minstrel, etc.) by Missel Thrush from Vortex, by St. Angelo and on through Whirlpool’s line to Stockwell. Kroonstad (Kilwarlin stout performer) it. the sire of Brown Jack, one of the greatest stayers in England of late years. Theo’s pedigree abounds with the names of winners of noted English long distance events.

The Halswell sportsman, Mr C. P. Cameron, headed the list of winning owners at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Easter meeting, the sum of £540 being won by Sir Guy, Avernus and Harold Denver. Other winners of more than £lOO included Mr E. F. C. Hinds £450, Mr G. J. Barton £440, Mr J. Guy £355, Mr L. S. Martin £350, Mr J. S. Shaw £315, Mr W. McKay £3OO, Mr V. Albom £250, Mr C. S. Donald £250; Mr J. J. Kennerley £225, Mr E. C. McDermott £175, Mr M. Scoon £175, Mrs M. Harrall £l5O, Mr G. Alexandre £125, Mr P. Brown £125, Mr B. Grice £ll5, Mrs E. A. Robson £lOO, Durbar Lodge, Ltd., £lOO, and W. H. Roche £lOO.

The fact that The Smuggler’s name does not appear in the N.Z. Stud Book has tempted several northern critics to describe him as of a poor handicap class, but a stayer. The scribes referred to need not be afraid that the Invercargill representative is not well and truly of the royal purple and well worthy of Stud Book recognition, as he is bred on very stout and approved lines throughout and claims many famous racehorses as close relatives. It has also been remarked that the Rorke’s Drift Lodge galloper is getting up in years, but he is only a seven-year-old and his advantage lies in the fact that he was hacked about as a utility horse and not trained or raced until he was thoroughly matured, a procedure that would evolve many successful racehorses if followed out with upstanding, large-framed equines.

It has been prophesied since his introduction to the New Zealand turf that the Australian-bred colt Southdown would prove useful to his owner, Mr J. M. Samson, with increasing age, and he marked the autumn of his juvenile career by winning two races at Riccarton this week for the Dunedin sportsman. His sire, Rampion, by Rossendale (recently defunct) was a noted stayer in the Commonwealth and Mr Samson’s friends are hoping that Southdown may have inherited the stamina of his proved progenitor, and there arc reasonable grounds for anticipation, as the colt has taken considerable ’ time to furnish and gallops as a long-striding customer and prospective stayer.

At one time the principal qualifications necessary for a. Liverpool Grand National candidate were jumping and staying ability. Now pace must enter into the make-up of any horse to give him a first-class chance. When KelIsboro’ Jack did 9min. 28sec. last year it was thought that would stand as a record for a long time. Last week, however, Golden Miller reduced the time to 9min. 20 2-ssec, and he carried 12.2. Despite figures tending to a different idea, many old-timers in England will continue to deplore the alleged fact that “steeplechaers are not what they were.”

From the meagre information received by wire as to the results of the Sydney Yearling Sales it would appear that the top price of the series was realized for an Heroic colt, acquired by Mr S. Masters, of Melbourne, at 1000 guineas. Described as a chestnut son of the champion sire of Australia, the colt claims as his dam the imported English mare Cohesion, by Syndrian (grandsire Polymelus dam’s side) from Aspie (imp.), by Polymelus from Jelly, by Isinglass from Lady Ailsa, by Ayrshire, and down on the dam’s line to Stockwell, a horse in his day known as the “Emperor of Stallions.” Others of the progeny of Heroic brought satisfactory prices, including a grey youngster at 725 guineas to Mr W. Jackson, of Victoria, as the son of Fairy Elf, by Chrysolares (an imported grey by Roi Herode) from Loversland, by Cooltrim (imp.) from Lady Capulet, by Positano (imp.) from Lady Trenton (dam of Lord Nolan, Melbourne Cup winner) by Trenton. The colt’s great-grandam, Lady Capulet, was a sister to Lord Cardigan, a Melbourne Cup winner. Described as a beautiful filly by Heroic, a chestnut youngster secured by Mr E. O’Brien, a Melbourne bookmaker, at 750 guineas presents stud credentials of great interest to New Zealanders. Her dam was Spearette, by Spearhead (imp. son of Spearmint—. Baroness La Fleche, by Ladas) from Showano (N.Z.), by St. Ambrose (imp.), from Savanna, by Stepniak from Seashell, by Chainshoi. from Nautilus, by Traducer from Waterwitch, by Camden from Mermaid (imp. and one of Maorilands most noted taproots). The future career of this Heroic—Spearette filly may presently provide turf interest for Maorilanders interested in the turf or the stud or both. Christchurch Press remarks:—“The fact of spring racing in Australia causing the absence from New Zealand early in November of some of its best horses is receiving consideration in the Dominion. In this connexion it is suggested that, as the New Zealand Cup meeting in Christchurch is the one

most affected, it should not be held until later in November than is now the case. The question arises, however, whether the number of horses absent really warrants the Canterbury Jockey Club departing from its present dates. Golden Hair was the only visitor of note from New Zealand that ran at the last Melbourne Cup meeting. Another New Zealander in Peter Jackson was a Melbourne Cup runner, but at that time he was held on lease by a Victorian, and therefore would not have been a competitor at the New Zealand Cup meeting even if he could have returned in time.”

If the proposal to hold the New Zealand Cup meeting late in November was adopted it would obviate a clash with Auckland R.C. Spring fixture, while next season it would not be held in opposition to the Centenary Melbourne Cup meeting. It would also afford Australians an opportunity to assist at the big Riccarton meeting, and who knows but they might be induced to bring some of their horses with them—next season many Maorilanders will be found at Flemington vzhen the Centenary Cup is under discussion and it is safe to say that a number’ of the Dominion’s leading gallopers will be there, too. The proposal looks to the writer to be one well worthy of earnest consideration. AVONDALE JOCKEY CLUB. ACCEPTANCES FOR TO-DAY.
