IN TOWN AND OUT

NEWS OF THE DAY Thefts of Petrol. Motorists who leave their cars at night in unlocked garages may find in the morning that the petrol register shows a decrease, for sneak thieves have been active in the dead of night removing petrol from tanks. » * * * Popular Movie Star Election. That interest throughout Southland in moving pictures is widespread is shown by the fact that, although the Southland Times Screen Contest (which is advertised on page 11) has been running only two days, entries are already beginning to come in from all parts of the province. * ¥ * V Speedboat Championship. In the New Zealand speedboat championships decided at Akaroa during Easter the Southland boat Tam o’ Shanter, owned by Mr H. Dunlop, jun., met with some success. It came second in the B class championship and secured another second and a third prize. * * * •

Youthful Bagpipe Player. Master Gordon Elder, Jed street, Invercargill, who won the silver cup for maiden marches at the Puversdale sports, is showing great promise with the bagpipes. He has competed in five contests, gaining three first prizes and two second prizes. Fie is under 16 years of age. * * Opening of Football Season.

To-day will see the “kick-off,” both literally and metaphorically, of the local football season, for several friendly games and practice matches have been arranged. Invercargill will travel, to Gore to play a match against Albion, while Star will meet Limehills at Biggar street. The Pirates Football Club, which has been strengthened by fresh blood and may be expected to provide some bright football this season, will hold a practice at Rugby Park, while a Star junior team will travel out to play a fixture at Riverton.

» « * * Operatic Society. The Invercargill Operatic and Dramatic Society has secured for its musical production this year “The Arcadians” by Mark Ar¥brient and A. M. Thompson, the music by Lionel Monckton and Howard Talbot. This play was first produced in London in 1909 and ran for 809 nights at the Shaftesbury Theatre, when Tom Walls made a hit in the role of Peter Doody. The first dramatic production at the Workshop Theatre will be Van Druten’s "There is always Juliet.”

Powers of Mr Shaw. The name of Mi- Bernard Shaw was freely mentioned by members of the council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce at its meeting on Thursday evening. Twice when it was suggested that some project should be investigated members facetiously nominated Mr Shaw as a suitable investigator, the first time concerning access to the sea, and the second concerning powercharges. The reason for the nomination was not made clear, except that one member remarked that Mr Shaw was probably the only person who might like to take on his shoulders the work that an investigation committee had found irksome.

Eglinton Valley Filmed. Scenes along the ruggedly beautiful Eglinton road filmed in a New Zealand Government Pictorial Review, which will be screened as one of the “shorts” on the current programme at the Regent Theatre to-night, should have an appeal to Southlanders, at last beginning to take quite a justifiable pride in the progress of this route. Last evening a private screening at which a Times reporter was present, was arranged and both from the point of view of photography and subject matter the film is a worthy Dominion production. Scenes at the Fairy Springs, Rotorua, and at Wairakei and Taupo are included. but the cameraman’s trip through the Eglinton Valley is the most interesting of all. At the 53-mile peg the workers are seen felling giant trees and dynamiting huge stumps in their forming of the road, while some fine panoramic views of the majestic lake, mountain and bush scenery have also been caught by the shifting lens of the camera.
