WINTON NOTES

DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL. MEETING OF COMMITTEE. (From Our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the committee of the Winton District High School was held on Wednesday evening last, when the chairman, the Rev. A. Gardiner, presided over the following members: Messrs J. H. Thomson, W. Hewitt, C. Grimwood, L. Smart and D. Wildey. The new rector (Mr C. A. Caigou) was also present. Prior to the transaction of the business of the evening the chairman introduced Mr Caigou and trusted that his sojourn in Winton would be both pleasant and profitable. Mr Caigou suitably replied. The following minute of appreciation of the services of the late rector (Mr J. A. Cushen) was moved by Mr Gardiner: “On the occasion of the transference of the rector, Mr J. A. Cushen, on promotion to the headmastership to the North School, Invercargill, the committee of the Winton District High School records its appreciation of the high quality of the service he rendered during his term as rector of this school. His control of the school has been firm but kindly, his personal bearing enthusiastic and wise, and his relations with the committee sympathetic and exceedingly helpful. The . committee regrets his going, but warmly congratulates him on his promotion and wishes him and his wife and family all success and happiness in the future.” A letter was received from the secretary of the Winton Basketball Club seeking permission for the use of the school courts for the coming year. It was decided to hold the letter in abeyance until the annual householders’ meeting early this month, when the incoming committee could deal with the request. Reference was made by the chairman to the holes that were beginning to form in the asphalt area and it was decided to accept the offer of the Winton Borough Council to repair the area, the work to be proceeded with immediately. It was disclosed in the attendance report of the rector for the month that the attendance had dropped somewhat due to the prevelance of measles and influenza. The report stated: Primary Department—Average roll, 239; average attendance, 196; 82 per cent. Secondary Department—Average roll, 35; average attendance. 30; 80 per cent. Total average roll, 274; total average attendance, 226. The visiting committee for the month reported that with the exception of the west playing area the grounds and buildings were in good order. It was decided to secure a load of eaiih for the many deep holes in the area. The annual balance-sheet was submitted and showed a small credit balance. Golf Club Opening. The official opening of the Winton Golf Club’s 1934 season took place last Wednesday afternoon in fine weather. There was not a large attendance present, but it is anticipated that the membership for the season will exceed that of last year. The playing area is in excellent order for so early in the year. The season was officially declared open by the president, Dr P. Gow, who extended a hearty welcome to all members and friends, and felt sure that the club could look forward to another successful season. Following afternoon tea Canadian mixed foursomes and other competitions were held. The winners of the Canadian foursomes were Mrs C. M. Lindsay and T. W. Brandford.
