The great use of header harvesting machines has resulted in a decrease in the demand for labour, according to information given to the Rev F. T. Read, president of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association. He stated at the last meeting of the executive of the association that men who had tried to get work in the harvest fields had discovered that very little was available. There was no doubt that the new header harvesting machines were doing away with a great deal of labour. Mr A. Li Emerson said these machines were used a great deal in the Ellesmere district, and it was reckoned that they made a saving of about 2/- per bushel.
