GARDEN CLUB

FIRST MEETING OF YEAR. Tire first meeting for 1934 of the Invercargill Garden Club, held last evening, was a most successful one, a large number of members being present. In a short address, the president, Mr L. Lennie, dealt with the importance of careful seed sowing for spring effects, with special attention to the sowing of Canterbury bells, wallflowers and antirrhinums.

Mr W. Stapleton delivered a most interesting address on the work which was at present being carried out by growers of the chrysanthemum. The third speaker, Mr F. Steans, spoke on select garden plants, particularly recent varieties of the geranium. This was a most instructive and enjoyable address.

It was decided to accept an offer for the disposal of goods belonging to the erstwhile Horticultural Society, the proceeds to be devoted to the purchase of a cup. This trophy, to be known as the Stewart Cup, to perpetuate the memory of a past president of the society, will be for annual competition.
