A SPECIAL STAMP
AIR MAIL FLIGHT TO AUSTRALIA. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, January 9. A special stamp bearing a suitable inscription will be issued for use on the mail carried to Australia on the first official air mail flight to Australia. The Post and Telegraph Department announced to-day that the stamp will be the existing 7d New Zealand air mail stamp, printed in a different colour and bearing a special overprint. The air mail fee for the flight will be sixpence per half ounce in addition to the ordinary postage. Special souvenir envelopes are being printed and all correspondence will be specially postmarked to identify it with the flight. NO MAIL ALLOWED FLIGHT TO NEW ZEALAND. (United Press Assn. —Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 8.15 p.m.) Sydney, January 9. The Postal Department refuses to allow Sir Charles Kingsford Smith to act as the first trans-Tasman postman. The department regards the flight as more or less experimental and regrets that it is unable to avail itself of the offer to carry mails to New Zealand. Sir Charles Kingsford Smith declares that the experimental stage has long since passed. However, he must accept the inevitable. TRIP TO SEA MEETING THE SOUTHERN CROSS. (Per United Press Association.) New Plymouth, January 9. Arrangements have been made for Mr Ulm’s Faith in Australia to reach New Plymouth on Thursday, or if Sir Charles Kingsford Smith is delayed, to make a flight of about an hour and a half to sea to meet the Southern Cross as it is approaching New Plymouth. Mr G. U. Allen will pilot the Faith in Australia and passengers will be taken. The Aero Club to-day completed arrangements for Sir Charles Kingsford Smith’s landing. The president, Mr A. F. Sandford, said that little extra work was required because the arrangements had by now become routine matters.
