ECONOMIC POLICY

UNITED STATES

ATTACK ON BRITISH

CRITIC

LETTER TO PRESIDENT

(United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Washington, January 8. Senator Lewis (Democrat, Illinois) caustically attacked Mr John Maynard Keynes, the British economist, in the Senate for addressing an open letter on economic questions to Mr Roosevelt. The letter appeared in the New York Times and the Chicago Tribune. _ “We confess, after reading the article, that it is readily conceded that his knowledge is partial and deficient, said Senator Lewis. “He states that sympathizers in England are nervous and despondent. We are sorry those in England can be either nervous or despondent and trust that by reading the article they may take on some other form such as confidence in their Government and the consciousness that we are conducting our Government without regard to the nationals of other nations. We assume that the reserve, wisdom and model good manners of orderly British, citizens such .as he would hardly approve of a writer in that country addressing the President of the United States in terms describing the policy of his country as foolish.” VALIDITY UPHELD EMERGENCY LEGISLATION. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 7.30 p.m.) Washington, January 8. The United States Supreme Court, by a vote of five justices to four, upheld the validity of the emergency relief legislation. Although the decision concerned the constitutionality of the Minnesota State law establishing a mortgage foreclosure moratorium,_ it is recognized as having broad ramifications and js considered one of the most momentous rulings in recent years. Administration officials _ interpreted the decision as an indication that the Court would sympathize with future legislation, notwithstanding its drastic nature, in the event of an emergency.
