A sea lion which recently found its way up the mouth of the Aohanga River, Pongaroa, has now become fully acclimatized' and appears to have taken up its permanent residence (says the Manawatu Evening Standard). The animal seems to prefer the company of visitors, says a correspondent, and apparently it was hurt prior to leaving the sea as a large gash indicates a recent bite or similar injury.

The view that those responsible for the building of Auckland’s concrete roads were to be commended for their foresight, was expressed recently by Mr A. H. Ferguson, who recently retired from the position of clerk of the Hawkes Bay County Council after 35 years’ service, and is now on a visit to Auckland. Mr Ferguson said Hawkes Bay also had built in concrete, but in a lesser degree than Auckland. The Main Highways Board had done excellent work for the Dominion’s roads, but it was still thinking in bitumen instead of concrete. With cement in abundance and relief labour plentiful there was a splendid opportunity for permanent road work. A concrete road programme of 50 miles a year at £6OOO a mile would mean an expenditure of only £300,000, but in 20 years the result would be .1000 miles of roads. Auckland had set a fine example, and should continue in its good work.

An amusing incident that is vouched for happened on the trams the other day (states the Dunedin Star). An elderly lady waited for a St. Kilda car at the Stock Exchange, and, just as one pulled up at -the corner near the ticket box, another tram, St. Clair bound, drew into the safety zone. Apparently under the impression that this was also a St. Kilda car, the old lady boarded the car, and did not observe anything amiss until she reached Forbury Corner. She tapped the conductor on the arm: “You’re going the wrong way, my man.” The conductor, naturally surprised, courteously informed her that the car was bound for St. Clair. “Oh, no” said the old lady, “I know that I got on a car for St. Kilda.” The conductor politely but firmly impressed upon the passenger that she was indubitably aboard a St. Clair tram, but the good lady was not to be denied, and, making use of the prerogative of her sex, told the astonished conductor: “This is not the car I got on.” ,
