REGIMENT’S MASCOT

ADOPTION OF JACKDAW.

The Border Regiment recruits stationed at the Castle Barracks at Carlisle have “got the bird” and they are very proud of it. The bird in this case is “Jack,” a tame jackdaw who has been appointed the regimental mascot in recognition of the amusing tricks he has learned.

“Jack” is owned by Mr J. McLean, a native of Clydeside, and the barracks’ civilian storeman, who cared for him after “Jack” as a fledgeling had fallen out of his nest in a hole in the barracks wall during the summer. Tire bird is a frequent visitor to the camp canteen, where his favourite delicacies are sponge cake and army biscuits.

He makes his home in the storeroom, where he often helps his master to unpack bales of army clothing by skilfully using his beak to untie the knots.
