MISSING FROM BOAT

CHINESE FIREMAN. (Per United Press Association.) Timaru, January 5. Wong Chun Loi, a Chinese fireman, aged 21 years, on the Benreoch, went ashore yesterday afternoon to buy tobacco. He had not returned by 8 o’clock when the chief fireman, the police, the customs officers and the agent made a systematic but unsuccessful search. Meanwhile, the vessel lay at anchor until 11.15 this morning when she sailed for Dunkirk, the agent having deposited a bond of £2OO. ARRESTED IN STREET. (Per United Press Association.) Timaru, January 5. After deserting the ship Benreoch, which sailed early this morning for France, and provoking a long and fruitless all night search in stormy weather, a Chinese trimmer, Wong Chun Loi, was arrested in the street this afternoon. Loi, when accosted, was accompanied by a Timaru Chinese, but the police could get no satisfaction from either. All the help Loi gave was that his ship was gone. His companion explained that Loi had lost his way after leaving the ship to purchase tobacco. The ship sailed after the agents had put up a bond of £2OO. It is understood Loi will be deported on the Benledie, which is in New Zealand waters.
