RAID ON CAFE
SAFE REMOVED IN MOTOR CAR. (Per United Press Association.) Gisborne, January 5. A heavy steel safe containing £2BO in cash and cheques with other valuables was removed bodily from a cafe in Gladstone road occupied by Theo. Nicholas early this morning. Car tracks in the yard indicate the manner in which the safe was removed. Nicholas was in his shop till 1.15 a.m. and the theft was discovered by an employee. Nicholas had not banked his takings for a fortnight. The safe contained £2OO in cash and £BO in cheques, also articles and money belonging to the staff, a collection of foreign coins and also the whole of Nicholas’s books and documents. The safe weighed three hundredweight and would have been a heavy load for two strong men to carry from the front to the back of the shop. All the circumstances point to a carefully planned raid.
