DARING ROBBERY

JEWELLERY REMOVED FROM WINDOW.

(Per United Press Association.)

Auckland, January 5.

Jewellery and banknotes of an estimated value of £2OO were stolen in a daring manner from a window of a Queen street shop last evening, apparently in broad daylight. The window is the property’ of the Smelters and Refiners’ Company, whose shop is some feet to the rear and is separated from the window. Between 5.30 and 9 o’clock, when the caretaker discovered that the door leading to the window had been broken open, the thieves gained access and stole old gold and jewellery most of which could be easily melted down and also Australian, Canadian and United States bank notes. It is believed the theft took place before 7 o’clock and that anyone who saw them in the window at that time would not suspect them of being thieves.
