CITY FIRE BRIGADE

THE YEAR’S WORK

101 CALLS ANSWERED.

During the year ended December 31 the City Fire Brigade attended a total of 101 calls, 40 of which were to fires involving property insured for £85,315 and estimated to be valued at £113,827. This information is included in a statement prepared by the superintendent (Mr F. Simpson). “The fact that our financial year begins in April and ends in March makes it appear that the figures do not tally with those of my annual report, but taking them as they stand we may consider them favourably,” stated the superintendent. “For the first three months, January to March, > property to the value of approximately £793 went up in smoke while for the remaining nine months property to the value of £3876 was destroyed, a total of £4669 for the year January to December 31, 1933.

“Eight new fire alarm points were added to the various circuits. New hose replaced that which was past repair. All plant and equipment are in first-class order. All the staff are very fit and well, there being no serious sickness or accident during the year. Social activities have been maintained with dances and cards during the winter months. Thanks are due to the Police department, the city engineer and his staff, the electrical engineer, the Post and Telegraph engineer and their staffs, also to the Press for publicity during the year.” The following table shows the number of calls attended by the brigade from January 1 to December 31 last year:—
