INAUGURAL SPORTS

GREENHILLS-BLUFF FIXTURE.

FRASER BROTHERS BREAK SAWING RECORD.

Under bright, sunny weather conditions the Greenhills-Bluff Athletic So-ciety-held its inaugural sports meeting yesterday at Argyle Park. The attendance of the public was disappointing considering the excellent day’s programme which had been arranged, the gate takings amounting to only £29 7/-. Entries in the various events, although not large, njay be considered satisfactory. There were some flaws in the method of carrying out the running events, but the races proved most interesting, and there is no reason why the society should not be able to stage a successful fixture every year. The Rugbv Park runner J. Gallagher won the 100 yards handicap and came second in the 75 yards, while R. Pickering had an even more successful day, winning the 220 and 440 and coming second in the 100 yards. R. Frampton secured a second placing and two thirds. Only a few of the betterknown professionals were present, and the times recorded in the amateur section were in many cases better than those made by the professionals. The star attraction of the day was the effort by the Fraser brothers, Alec and Horace, to lower the worlds double-handed sawing record of 12 seconds for 18 inch logs. The M-tooth English saw, with quick, rhythmic movements, ripped through the white pine log, and amid tremendous enthusiasm it was announced by the judge, Mr T. O’Byrne, that the world’s record had been lowered by one-fifth of a second, the effort having been completed in 11 4-ssec. Application will be made to have the record declared official. An interesting exhibition of Jigger board falling in a manner identical with that seen at competitions in Sydney and Melbourne was given by Walter Bone, who climbed a specially erected tree and chopped the top off it. A. Fraser secured a silver cup given by Mr C. N. Crawford for winning the 14inch underhand chop. The officials were headed by Mr J. McLauchlan, jun. (president) and Mr A. P. McDonald (secretary), who worked energetically. No time was lost in running off the events. The Bluff Watersiders’ Band was m attendance, while Mr E. Parke supplied the music for the Highland and national dancing. The results were:— PROFESSIONAL RUNNING. 75 YARDS GREENPOINT HANDICAP (Open). First £l, second 10/-. A. Fraser (7yds) - J.
