BLUFF CARNIVAL
OPENING PROCEEDINGS.
(From Our Correspondent.)
On Thursday evening the Bluff Diamond Jubilee Regatta Carnival was opened in fine weather and Gore street presented a bright appearance under flags and bright lights. A very large crowd gathered, many people being in carnival costume, and a cheerful spirit prevailed from the start. The Bluff Waterside Workers’ and Pipe Bands were in attendance and dancing soon began in the street and was continued for some hours. A very attractive entertainment was provided from a lorry by the local Haere Tonu Party, the hakas, Maori melodies, popular choruses and music being highly appreciated by the crowd. The members of the party were: Mr T. Spencer (leader), Misses B. and I. West, E. Gilroy, Mrs P. O’Leary, Misses L. Spencer and P. Anglem; Messrs N. Bradshaw, A. Ryan, I. Rita, B. Gilroy. Highland dances were given by Miss Calder to the piping of Mr C. Parker, while a duet (pipes and cornet) was contributed by the latter and Mr J. Johnston. The evening formed a very successful opening for Bluff’s carnival effort.
Last night was an off night as far as carnival activities were concerned, but a considerable crowd thronged Gore street, and a cheerful spirit was evident on every hand. It was the late shopping night (the stores close to-day at noon), and from the numbers invading the various shops it was apparent that brisk business was being done. Sideshows on the waterfront were also well patronized, especially by the juveniles. This evening, the big event of the carnival, the monster parade, will be held, and if the same beautiful weather prevails that favoured the port last night, the effort is bound to be a success.
