(Per United Press Association.) Nelson, December 1. The first day’s play in the Hawke Cup match saw Nelson, the holders, with a substantial first innings lead over Marlborough the challengers. Marlborough in the first innings made 158 (M. Neal 19, Hastilow 44, A. Neal 30, O’Sullivan 18; Newman took four for 42, Freeman three for 38).
