A SIDE-SHOW SIDELIGHT. A feature of the Christchurch Winter Show was Side-Show Alley, offering a wide diversity of amusements. One could throw a dart at a target or could attempt to throw a woman wrestler. The Side-Show merchants were going full blast every afternoon and evening. One man in particular, a small man with a big voice, had a table covered with silver coins and invited all comers to win these coins by surrounding them with rings. On the edge of the table he had a bottle of Baxter’s Lung Preserver and was frequently heard to remark that they were welcome to the money but they had to leave the “Baxter’s” alone as he could not carry on without it.
