WYNDHAM NEWS

VISIT TO MR JOHN SMITH’S FARM. (From Our Correspondent. Last Thursday afternoon the practical boys of the Wyndham District High School, Secondary Department paid a visit to the model farm “Tamlet” of Mr John Smith, Wyndham Ridges. Mr Smith spent some hours in taking the boys over the farm and giving them instructions. The boys were entertained at afternoon tea by Miss Smith at the conclusion of which W. Diack and Glen Muir thanked Mr Smith in neat speeches for his interesting instruction. Cliff Campbell thanked Miss Smith for the afternoon tea. Mr Carson who was in charge of the boys in the unavoidable absence of the teachers also thanked Mr Smith. Mr Marsh, who has always been interested in the boys, also spoke, referring to boyhood days. Women’s Division. The first birthday party of the Brydone Branch of the W.D.F.U. took place on Friday evening. Despite the inclement weather prevailing, the public hall at that centre was taxed to its utmost capacity, visitors being present from Seaward Downs, Mataura, and Edendale.

The opening portion of the function embraced the following concert items :•— Pianoforte duet, Misses M. Drysdale and M. Deegan; songs by Mrs G. F. Burgess, Miss M. Deegan, Mr Dowling and Master H. Dillon; Sketch, Misses Taylor, Drysdale, Townley and Mr H. Squires; Playette, Mesdames G. and W. Coker and Miss Taylor. The second part featured the cutting of the birthday cake, which was played in by pipers H. Mawdsley and H. McDowell. Mrs J. Wallace (president) then called upon Mrs A. J. Townley (president of Edendale Branch) to light the candle. This done, Mesdames McConnell, Mataura, Townley, Ota Creek, and Amott, Seaward Downs, each cut a slice of the sweet meat, and in turn congratulated Brydone on attaining its first anniversary, with best wishes for its future career. After supper had been partaken of, a few hours of dancing ensued, to music supplied by Mr William Lobb, Mr A. McFadyen officiating as M.C.

The fourth birthday party of the Wyndham branch was held in Masonic Social Hall on Friday afternoon, when Mrs W. Scott presided over a large attendance of members. The first part of the proceedings took the form of a concert, towards which Mrs W. O. C. McKay and Miss Marjory McKay contributed a pianoforte duet, Mrs T. Skinner sang two solos, and Mrs W. G. Leckie played a pianoforte solo. Miss Ella Dobbie acted as accompanist. A competition on Jumbled names of flowers was won by Mrs Jno. Craig, with Mrs R. G. Carson gaining second honours.

Mrs O, E. Niederer, a member of Southland Executive, congratulated the branch on the progress it was making, and hoped it would continue in such manner. While the social activities of the branch were to be commended, its ideas aimed at something much deeper, in that it was their objective to try and improve conditions for women and children on the land, and this could only be achieved by one and all joining up with the W.D.F.U. In conclusion Mrs Niederer extended best wishes from Southland Executive, and paid a tribute to the work of Mesdames Scott and Hunter, as president and secretary respectively of the branch. Mrs R. K. McDonald, Edendale, then lit the four candles' adorning the cake, following which Mrs Niederer cut the cake.

Congratulations were extended by Mrs J. Dunlop (Seaward Downs), Edie, (Morton Mains), Swale, (Gorge Road), Hargest (Woodlands), and Geddes (Edendale.) Mrs Carson proposed a vote of thanks to the performers and speakers, also to Mrs J. H. Foster for donating the birthday cake, following which a sumptuous afternoon tea was dispensed. There was a fair attendance at Mokoreta Hall, on Wednesday evening, when a dance was held in aid of hall funds. Music was supplied by the Galdwell family, and the duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr A. E. Patterson. During the evening, a competition for a cake made by Mrs W. H. Jones was won by Mr J. Patterson, and as a result of the competition, the hall funds will benefit by £7.
