TECHNICAL COLLEGE

ANNUAL SPORTS A ‘ TWO RECORDS BROKEN, Although the weather was fine yesterday when the Southland Technical College students held their annual sports fixture a fairly strong southerly breeze blowing in the afternoon made the going, except in the sprint events, somewhat unpleasant for the runners. The track itself, however, was quite fast and competition particularly keen. Considering the wind, some good performances were registered, two records being broken and one equalled during the day. T. Heads clipped l-ssec off the 440 yards open championship while W. Forde registered 2-ssec faster time than the existing record of 25sec for the 220 yards open championship. The 27sec record in the 220 yards junior championship was equalled by G. Stewart. With only two events still to be decided—the mile run and the cricket ball throw—T. Heads (28 points) cannot be dislodged from the position of senior champion. W. Forde, who annexed the championship last year, is running second with 16 points. The same two events have also to be finalized in the junior section and at present G. Stewart (23 points) is leading for the championship from L. McLay (16 points). Last year, for the first time since the inauguration of the sports, the house system was in operation and such was the additional interest lent to the events that it was again adopted yesterday. Each of the four houses—• Takitimu, Tokomaru, Tainui and Arawa (named after the famous Maori canoes) —had its members gathered behind their own particular artistic banner and rivalry ran high as the representatives of each house were spurred on to greater efforts by the lusty cheers of their supporters. So far as the athletic sports were concerned, Tainui, thanks largely to the achievements of its girl athletes, proved the victorious house, but the championship really goes to the house selected on performances in all branches of sport spread over the year. The girls’ events were just as keenly contested as the boys’. The whole programme—quite an ambitious one—was put through without a hitch, the organization being excellent. The results were as follows:—
