UNEMPLOYED WOMEN

The letter from the members of the Invercargill Women’s Unemployment Committee traversing some of our remarks on the work of the Advisory Committee, is unfortunately indefinite on certain points. For instance, commenting on the Advisory Committee’s visits it speaks of the previous one as “some months ago,” and later as a “few months ago.” Actually, we find that the Advisory Committee’s previous visit to Invercargill occurred in April, 1932, so that the “few months” really refers to a period of about eighteen months. From this we gather that eighteen months ago the Advisory Committee saw the work being done in Invercargill, and now has had the .chance to see it again. If the

members of the Advisory Committee told the Invercargill Committee nothing new on either occasion, it may have obtained ideas which could be useful elsewhere. On the question of the funds available the letter said that the work of the Local Committee was restricted through lack of funds; but has the committee made application for funds to extend its operations, and has it met with a refusal? That, it seems to us, is an important point. The existence of an unexpended balance in excess of the £2O mentioned in the letter might have been referred to with more exactness. At the same time, on this question of the restrictions put on the committee, it would be interesting to have some idea of the number of cases the committee has had to deal with and now has in its care.
