CROSSING TRAGEDY
TRAIN HITS CAR. CONSTABLE DIES FROM INJURIES. (Per United Press Association.) Hamilton, October 26. A serious accident occurred at the level crossing at Huntly yesterday afternoon resulting in the death of Constable James Shields. Constable David Robertson, who was also in the car, was admitted to the Waikato Hospital and his condition is satisfactory following an operation. Constable Robertson is aged 50 years and was married with three children. He was in charge of the Huntly Police Station. Constable Shields was 36 years of age and was married with one child. He was also stationed at Huntly. The pair were going to Ohinewai to make an inquiry. Constable Robertson was driving a light sedan five-seater car which was struck by the RotoruaAuckland express at 2 p.m. and the vehicle was carried for about 69 yards. The injured men were admitted to the Waikato Hospital and Shields died an hour and a-half later.
The crossing is considered to be a particularly dangerous one and is inadequately protected.
