LABOUR GAIN

EAST FULHAM SEAT BRITISH POLITICAL SURPRISE BLOW TO GOVERNMENT (United Press Assn—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 7.5 p.m.) London, October 26. The by-election at East Fulham j owing to the death of Sir Kenyon Vaughan-Morgan resulted:— J. C. Wilmot (Labour) 17,790 ? W. J. Waldron (Conservative) 12,950 The Labour gain was a big surprise as Labour has never won the constituency before. The announcement was followed by scenes of enthusiasm. Mr Wilmot, says his victory means that the British people demand that there shall be no more war and that the British Government shall give a lead to the whole world by immediately initiating a policy of general disarmament. East Fulham is the fourth seat lost to Labour in 24 by-elections since the general election. The Daily Herald says the result of the by-election is the clearest indication yet that the so-called National Government no longer represents the nation. It may cling to office, but the writing is on the wall and its fate is certain. The News-Chronicle in a leading article declares that the result is a startling blow to the Government. The main issue was peace and how to ensure it. East Fulham voted for better houses, not bigger battleships. The Government will clearly be well advised to heed the dramatic warning. Tlie Daily Mail says the result intensely surprised Government circles. The voting at' the general election in 1931 resulted: Sir Kenyon VaughanMorgan (Conservative) 23,438; Sir John Maynard (Labour) 8917; J. H. Greenwood (Liberal) 1788.
